Fishing Reel Drag Explained

What drag actually does
Drag washers create controlled friction. When load exceeds the selected setting, the spool can release line rather than transferring every spike directly to the line, knot and hook.
Why smoothness matters
A drag that starts abruptly can create a sudden tension spike. Consistency across the useful adjustment range is therefore more meaningful than simply choosing the highest advertised maximum.
Setting drag
Set drag conservatively for the line, knots, rod and target. Manufacturer guidance and a scale are better than guessing. Re-check after changing line or setup.

Maximum drag versus usable drag
Maximum drag is easy to advertise, but most fishing happens below that ceiling. What matters is whether the reel provides a smooth, predictable adjustment range appropriate for the line, rod and target. A very high maximum figure does not compensate for a poorly matched setup.
Why the rod and knots matter too
The reel is only one part of the load path. Rod action, line strength, leader strength, knots and hook size all influence how much pressure the system can tolerate. Drag should be set with the entire setup in mind rather than treated as an isolated reel feature.
When to inspect the drag
