Capacity versus weight
More line can be useful in surf applications, but oversized tackle becomes tiring and can unbalance the rod. Choose enough reserve without treating maximum capacity as the goal.
Salt and sand
Surf equipment sees harsh exposure. Follow manufacturer cleaning instructions and keep the reel out of sand whenever possible.
Match the surf rod
Long surf rods span a range of powers and lure ratings. Use those ratings plus intended line to narrow reel size.

Saltwater changes the buying criteria
Saltwater exposes reels to corrosion, spray and abrasive contamination. Construction intended for saltwater use is valuable, but it does not remove the need for careful maintenance. Rinse or wipe the reel only as directed by the manufacturer, avoid forcing water into the body and allow the reel to dry before storage.
Do not oversize for a hypothetical fish
Choose capacity and drag for the fishing you realistically do. Carrying an unnecessarily large reel can reduce casting comfort and create a poorly balanced outfit. The target species, line strength, fishing depth and likelihood of long runs should determine how much reserve capacity you actually need.
Before buying
Confirm whether the exact model and size is intended for saltwater, then verify capacity for your preferred line, reel weight, retrieve rate and handle configuration. Product families often change specifications between sizes.
