Why Is My Fishing Reel Not Reeling?
Troubleshoot common reasons a fishing reel handle turns without retrieving line or the reel will not turn normally.

Handle turns but line does not retrieve
Check the line-to-spool connection and whether the spool/rotor system is functioning normally. On a spinning reel, confirm the bail is closed for retrieval.
Spool slips under light load
An extremely loose drag can allow spool movement with little resistance. Adjust gradually within the reel’s normal range.
Handle will not turn
Do not apply excessive force. Sand, damaged gearing, line intrusion or internal failure may require disassembly by a qualified technician.
After saltwater exposure
Binding following saltwater or sand exposure is a reason to stop and inspect/service the reel rather than grind contamination through moving parts.
Start with the manufacturer's service guidance
Reel internals differ. Seals, bearings, drag washers, grease and oil locations are not identical across models. The safest maintenance procedure is the one documented for the exact reel, especially when opening the body could affect seals or warranty coverage.
Avoid turning maintenance into damage
High-pressure water, aggressive solvents, excess lubricant and forced disassembly can create new problems. If the reel grinds, binds or shows internal corrosion, professional service is often safer than continuing to operate it under load.
Make inspection part of storage
Before putting the reel away, check line condition, visible fasteners, handle operation, drag adjustment and any obvious salt or sand contamination. Finding a problem at home gives you time to correct it before the next trip.
