Inshore
Weight and casting comfort matter when making hundreds of casts. Choose capacity and drag for the intended line and target rather than automatically carrying offshore-sized tackle.
Surf
Capacity, casting characteristics and exposure to sand/salt all matter. A reel still needs maintenance even when marketed for saltwater use.
Offshore and deep water
Heavier work can justify conventional or electric systems, additional capacity and different drag requirements. Match the reel to the method and rod.

Saltwater exposes reels to corrosion, spray and abrasive contamination. Construction intended for saltwater use is valuable, but it does not remove the need for careful maintenance. Rinse or wipe the reel only as directed by the manufacturer, avoid forcing water into the body and allow the reel to dry before storage.
Do not oversize for a hypothetical fish
Choose capacity and drag for the fishing you realistically do. Carrying an unnecessarily large reel can reduce casting comfort and create a poorly balanced outfit. The target species, line strength, fishing depth and likelihood of long runs should determine how much reserve capacity you actually need.
